OutThere Sailing
OutThere Sailing Program |
OutThere Sailing (OTS) has been created for 12-17 year olds who want to try sailing in a non-competitive, social and fun setting. Centres are encouraged to use equipment they already have and try to provide a widely varied experience for both their instructors and participants. OTS encourages the use of several watercrafts such as – Keelboats, Dinghies, Stand Up Paddle Boards, Windsurfers and Powerboat adventures.
Benefits for Centres are:
- Increase in younger generations being involved in your club community.
- Encourages teenagers who aren’t interested in traditional sort offerings to try something new.
- Enjoyable for instructors to teach sailing for the love of it, not for competition.
- Engages teenagers who may have left the club, to do non competitive sports.
- Gets the parents and families of participants involved within the club, by encouraging off water socialisation such as an “end of day BBQ”.
- Received support from Australian Sailing such as marketing resources, instructor manuals and social media promotion.
Running the OTS program at your Centre provides a social environment where teenagers are able to cultivate real friendships with others from their local area, whilst potentially igniting a love for sailing in the process. Having a program that encourages socialisation, adventure and getting out in nature is a way to positively influence club culture.
Socialisation and fun both on and off the water are paramount; club culture is inclusive of everyone and there is plenty for parents and teenagers to get involved with. Many clubs have been able to retain young sailors who were no longer interested in competitive sailing, encourage siblings and friends, and even give their competitive sailors an outlet to sail with a key emphasis on socializing and having fun.
