Overview

Umpires are essential to conducting quality Teams or Match racing events. The on-water Umpire closley watches competing boats and issues penalties when a boat breaks a rule. The Umpire's role requires the ability to perform an entire day on-water and effectively communicate with competitors.

The NOP Umpire accreditation structure is as follows:

1. Club Umpire
An individual capable of being a Lead Umpire at Club level, displaying boat skills (driving and positioning) and Knowledge of “the game”.
2. State Umpire
An individual capable of being an Umpiring Team Leader, with an in-depth knowledge of all facets of the game.

3. National Umpire
An individual capable of being an Umpiring Team Leader, with an in-depth knowledge of all facets of the game.

Courses

The Australian Sailing Umpire course provides a structured approach to learning the technical aspects of umpiring Teams Racing or Match Racing, including correct boat positioning techniques and communications with competitors and officials.

The Umpire course is aimed at educating Australian Sailing members to conduct consistent and fair Teams or Match racing. The course delivers key information for Umpires of all levels.

Within the Umpire course, State and National Umpires will receive advanced principles to conduct championships racing (National Umpires to also receive principles to mentor Club and State level Umpires).
