Become an Official

Officiating is a rewarding way to contribute to the fair and safe running of sailing competition.

Australian Sailing recognises these six officiating disciplines. Click the button under each discipline to learn more about getting accredited:

Judge

Judges handle protests and requests for redress in accordance with the rules.

Getting started
Getting started with officiating is as easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Enquire about volunteering as an official at your local club.
  2. Complete an eLearning course, or attend one of our face-to-face courses.
  3. Continue to build your skills and knowledge with hands-on experience.

Finding a course or getting a practical assessment
For help finding an upcoming course or an official to conduct a practical assessment, contact your local Club Support Officer.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
There are many ways an official can demonstrate the skills required for accreditation. Some examples include:
•    Resume of your experience.
•    Reports from other accredited officials.
•    Examples of your work, e.g. training programs or videos of your officiating.
•    Evidence of other study, such as completing an overseas training course.

International Race Officials applications and appointments
International Race Officials appointments are administered by World Sailing, who provide more information on their Officials Resource Centre. Australian Sailing also provides information on National Authority endorsement and application guidance.

Aspiring officials should connect with the National Race Officials Committee to discuss opportunities for mentorship and exposure to events.
