Technical committee seminar
Published Wed 28 Jun 2023
Clubs running events under rating rules should register to attend an online seminar on how a technical committee can be used to give competitors comfort that ratings are correct, that the racing is fair, and the results are good.
The online seminar is geared to sailing managers and sailing committees of clubs that run races under a rating system. These could be races under ORC or IRC for keelboats, or under CBH for sportsboats. The approach is the same for all. That is to check boats in advance, immediately before, or during racing.
Covered on the seminar will be topics such as:
- Why have a technical committee
- The rules that enable what they do
- What things they should look at
- Communication with competitors
- What should be achieved by this
- How AS can help
Under any rating rule and Special Regulations, ultimately it is the competitor’s responsibility to check that their boat’s measurements and safety equipment are good. But it is a shared responsibility, nonetheless. By having a technical committee doing checks in a systematic way, the club who is the organising authority will have played their part in bringing integrity to their event and ensuring competitor satisfaction.
