Performance Tips from Jason Close

Published Fri 09 Sep 2022

Jason Close offers some quickfire tips for racing under IRC or ORC.

Probably setting an Australian record for the number of clubs he is a member of, which are many, Jason Close is committed to racing his J133 Patriot as competitively as possible. Jason takes a practical approach to improving his performance under IRC or ORC.

1. Look for a well performing boat that is the same design, search their ORC certificate and compare it with your boat especially sail plan and measurements and boat weight then use this as a template to optimise your boat with a proven performer.
2. Talk to sailmakers asking them what other similar boats are doing is a good idea.
3. Watch out for the conditions that other boats sail in be careful not to reduce your sail plan too much if you sail in predominately lighter condition and they sail in a location with mainly higher wind and vice versa, a local boat is the best option if available.
