On the rules with Colleen Darcey

Published Wed 28 Jun 2023

As the Sailing Operations Manager, Colleen gets great job satisfaction from being part of the Race Management and supporting sailors to get out on the water and enjoy the racing. Since working for a club in a role that manages the racing, Colleen has learned a huge amount about the Racing Rules of Sailing.

But Colleen’s sailing started as a 10 year old in the Sabot class and progressed to keelboats at the age of 18 years. Collen always loved close tactical racing in a quality fleet, and her most recent experience was competing in the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta in Melbourne where they took out first place in their division. In tight competitive racing like that, any boat can use good rules knowledge.

On the rules, Colleen offers advice that is as simple as it is sensible.

1.    Always read the Sailing Instructions!
2.    If you get an opportunity to be part of a protest, you will learn heaps.
3.    The Racing Rules of Sailing are there to support you to have quality racing, fair competition and supports safety on the water, get around them.
