ORC Ratings in Australia

Published Tue 05 Sep 2023

ORC international (ORCi) and ORC club (ORCc) have their place in racing both offshore and coastal races. ORCi is a rating system that requires a boat to be measured by an official measurer, someone who is trained in producing the most accurate data for each boat they measure. ORCc can be measured by the boat’s owner.  In both cases these measurements are provided to Australian Sailing where they are then entered into the ORC software to produce the boats rating.

ORCi is used worldwide and is applied at the same level in all countries.  It is intended for use on a world stage, for regional competition or at a national level. It has been said that ORCi is the most accurate monohull rating system, being defined by detailed measurement practices. A boat also receives their personalised Stability Datasheet with their rating certificate.

ORCc is prevalent in clubs in Victoria and Tasmania for racing. There is also a strong fleet in NSW with the RPAYC at the vanguard of its adoption. ORCc applications are growing in many other states as its popularity increases. Whilst based on declared data, ORCc is still seen as a terrific way to give boats a fair rating.

220 ORC rating applications have been processed since the beginning of the ratings season, June 30 this year, 2023.
