Lifejacket checks and service
Published Thu 01 Dec 2022
All race categories under the Special Regulations require lifejackets in some way. Crews and Equipment Auditors should be aware what counts in a lifejacket.
Lifejackets are a fundamental piece of personal protective equipment when sailing and both state and territory maritime regulators and Australian Sailing require their carriage and wearing in some way. But aside to ‘what the rules say’, crews and Equipment Auditors should inform themselves about what matters when it comes to lifejackets.
The first and most obvious is wearing it. Carrying one on board but not wearing it is a contributing factor in 70% of boating related fatalities. In another 13% of boating fatalities a lifejacket was being worn, but for reasons of it being in disrepair or incorrectly fitted, it couldn’t do its job.
There is a terrific portal developed collaboratively between state and territory maritime regulators for lifejackets. The Lifejacket Portal provides information and videos on how to choose the right lifejacket, complete a pre-wear check, and perform a more thorough inspection. Crews and Equipment Auditors alike should watch these videos to understand the basic care that contribute to lifejackets doing their job.
When auditing lifejackets, its more than just counting them and seeing that they are manufactured in accordance with an applicable standard. The Equipment Auditor should also satisfy themselves that the lifejackets are in good condition. The videos for the pre-wear check and regular inspection in the Lifejacket Portal show excellent basics for checking lifejackets and having a look at some of those presented will not only confirm compliance with the Special Regulations, but help the crew understand the importance of lifejacket serviceability.
When it comes to lifejackets, ultimately you have just one job. Wear it, especially at times of heightened risk.
We’re also excited to let you know that Australian Sailing has reorganised all of its safety resources to make it easier for you. Check out the new Safety Hub here!
